How much do I owe for Taxes when I buy my new car?
Calculating Taxes Fees & Penalties is a question that is always present when shopping for a new motor vehicle in Louisiana. For most cases, the items listed in the table and images below represent the base line items. That is generally Tax, Title, and License as we like to call it and it is the amount required to get your motor vehicle legally on the road.
This page does not apply when:
- Bringing a Motor Vehicle into Louisiana from another state/country.
- When the Buyer trades in a vehicle against the new car.
- Read the full details posted by the Louisiana Department of Revenue
Financed Vehicles usually do not require the Buyer to get their own Tax, Title, & License done, so this is more geared toward the cash buyers. For the basic and general motor vehicle sales use the below table to get an idea what taxes to expect.
Remember there is always Policy available to look up and read about. The policy for this can be found here, courtesy of Express Lane. The Department of Revenue also has their informational brochure here.

Calculating Taxes Fees & Penalties on Automobile (Cars, Mini Vans, SUV, Hatchbacks, Cross-Overs, Wagons, etc.) license plates are based upon the selling price of the vehicle. The current rate is .1% of the value of the vehicle per year, with a minimum base of $10,000. The license plates are sold in two-year increments, therefore the minimum price is $20.00.
