In Louisiana, the sale and ownership of exotic pets are subject to both state and local regulations. The state imposes restrictions on certain species, and individual municipalities may have additional ordinances that further regulate or prohibit the possession of exotic animals.

State Regulations:

According to the Louisiana Administrative Code, it is illegal to possess, purchase, or sell certain exotic animals as pets. Prohibited species include, but are not limited to:

  • Non-Human Primates:
  • Bears:
  • Wolves:
  • Big Cats:
    • Lions
    • Tigers
    • Leopards
    • Cheetahs
    • Cougars
    • Jaguars
    • Bobcats
    • Lynx
    • Caracals
    • Hybrids of these animals

These restrictions are in place due to concerns about public safety and the well-being of the animals.
