Source: wbrz.com | Read full story →
OMAHA, Neb. — LSU baseball won its 8th national title over the weekend in Omaha with a 2-0 series against Coastal Carolina, and Tiger fans also won big at an Omaha bar.
For the second year in a row, LSU fans won the Rocco’s Jello Shot Contest, buying a total of 52,390 shots during more than a week in Omaha. LSU fans are the first-ever repeat champions of the event.
The College World Series runner-up Coastal Carolina took second place in the Rocco’s contest with 9,117 shots. LSU’s SEC rival to the north, Arkansas, ranked third with just over 9,000 shots.
Proceeds from each Jello shot bought at Rocco’s during the College World Series were given to local food banks.
Gov. Jeff Landry was at Rocco’s on Saturday and contributed 1,000 shots toward LSU’s massive win.

Special group of dudes doing special things…
— Michael Cauble (@Cauble) June 22, 2025
All season long they talked about having the right guys on the bus ??
A great mix of talent and character @LSUbaseball pic.twitter.com/04jC9OUC9MIt was a wild start to game two of the men’s College World Series between LSU and Coastal Carolina. Coastal head coach Kevin Schnall was ejected from the game in the first inning after arguing what appeared to be pitch calls with home plate umpire Angel Campos. As the argument continued, first-base coach Matt Schilling was also ejected from the game after giving the umpire crew an earful.
The Chanticleers struck first with a second inning with a home run to left from designated hitter Dean Mihos to take the early 1-0 lead on the Tigers. However, in the top of the third Daniel Dickinson led off with a single and Michael Braswell bunted him over to second before Ethan Frey drove a ball hard to left for an RBI double to even the score at 1-1.
In the fourth inning, Chris Stanfield drove in two runs with a single to left field off of Chanticleer starter Jacob Morrison. Derek Curiel then stung a shot back up the middle to plate two more for the Tigers to make it 5-1 in the fourth and chase Coastal’s starter.
Coastal Carolina struck for two runs in the seventh with its second home run of the afternoon to tighten up the scoreboard to a 5-3 game.
In the bottom of the ninth, Coastal put the potential tying run aboard with a single just before LSU reliever Chase Shores struck out a batter for out number one. Chanticleers’ Wells Sykes then grounded into a double play to win the game for the Tigers.
The win marks LSU baseball’s eighth national title and Jay Johnson’s second in just three years.
Jay’s mind never stops, until the final out.
— Michael Cauble (@Cauble) June 23, 2025
And then he’s a 5 year old all over again. #itwasgreat pic.twitter.com/cBJp7BwKGgLSU pitcher Anthony Eyanson was been impressive for all of the game as he worked out of at least one base-runner on board in every inning of the game and only allowed a pair of home runs. Eyanson recorded nine strikeouts while walking just one Chanticleer batter in the sixth and third innings of work allowing three runs on seven hits.
The NCAA released a statement regarding the first inning ejections midway through the game:
In the bottom of the first inning, Coastal Carolina head coach Kevin Schnall and first base coach Matt Schilling were ejected from the game for continued arguing about balls and strikes after being warned initially by the umpire crew. NCAA Playing Rule 3-6-f-Note 1 states that balls, strikes, half swings or decisions about hit-by-pitch situations are not to be argued. After a warning, any player or coach who continues to argue balls, strikes, half swings or a hit-by-pitch situation shall be ejected from the game.
In addition to today’s ejections, Coach Schnall is suspended for the next two games per NCAA Playing Rule 5-15-a-4, which states that an additional two-game suspension is added to any other penalties. By rule, no team personnel may continue to argue or to continue to excessively express themselves with prolonged actions or offensive language after an ejection.
NCAA Playing Rule 2-26-f states that an assistant coach, if ejected, is automatically suspended for one game. Per NCAA Playing Rule 5-15-a-4 an additional two-game suspension is added to any other penalties. By rule, Coach Schilling is suspended for three games.
Neither Schnall or Schilling would have been allowed to coach in game three on Monday, but will now serve their suspensions at the beginning of next season.

OMAHA, Neb. – LSU baseball earned a couple of off days after beating Arkansas 6-5 Wednesday night in walk off fashion. They celebrated with Tiger fans on Thursday with a pep rally at the team hotel.
LSU has advanced to the College World Series finals and will compete for their eighth National Championship against Coastal Carolina.
LSU has been playing their best baseball in moments that matter the most. However, that didn’t happen overnight.
Since the team got together in August of 2024 and decided the type of team they wanted to be, their priority was to be selfless and to do everything in the best interest of the team.
It also helps that this Tiger squad has a very close bond that shows on the field with how they’ve worked together.
Hopefully that closeness will help them through the finals because they’re facing a Coastal Carolina team that is on a 26-game winning streak.
The last time the Tigers and Chanticleers faced off, it was 2016, and Coastal Carolina knocked LSU out of the Super Regional to advance to the College World Series. They went on to win the National Championship that same year by defeating an Arizona team that was coached by current LSU skipper, Jay Johnson.
LSU and Coastal Carolina will get things going in the Finals on Saturday at 6 p.m. CT from Charles Schwab Field. The game will be televised on ESPN.

WBRZ FLASHBACK: LSU basketball legend Shaq drafted first overall in the 1992 NBA Draft
Source: wbrz.com | Read full story →
BATON ROUGE — This week in WBRZ history, legendary LSU basketball star Shaquille O’Neal was drafted into the NBA.
On June 24, 1992, O’Neal was drafted by the Orlando Magic after the Florida team beat out the favored Minnesota Timberwolves, an outcome some still consider to be fixed.
The 7’1″ center was the first overall pick after leaving the Dale Brown-led LSU Tigers early. The rest, as they say, is history.
O’Neal became one of the league’s most dominant players, putting up a career 28,596 points, helping Team USA win gold at the 1996 Olympics and eventually having his number — 33 — retired in Baton Rouge.
Now, the sports legend, who has been retired for nearly 15 years, remains an ambassador to the sport, appearing on Inside the NBA and becoming a media personality outside of basketball, appearing in dozens of movies, TV shows, and commercials.
O’Neal, however, is most fondly remembered by the capital region as a hometown hero, despite being born in New Jersey. O’Neal has been memorialized outside the Pete Maravich Assembly Center with a massive bronze statue of him dunking.

OMAHA – The LSU Tigers game against UCLA will resume Tuesday at 10:03 a.m. after a weather delay pushed the game well into the night Monday.
The game was delayed twice for severe weather moving south into the Omaha area as the game moved to the middle of fourth inning.
The Tigers answered the bell and Jared Jones got the monkey off his back as he belted a three-run home run in the first inning to push LSU in front of UCLA 4-3 after the Bruins started the game with four hits in the winners’ bracket game at the College World Series on Monday night.
LSU starter Anthony Eyanson was touched up in the first as the Bruins stacked singles on top of singles to jump out to an early 3-0 lead.
However the Tigers got the scoring started in the bottom of the frame as Jake Brown drove home Ethan Frey for LSU’s first run of the game.
With two runners on Jared Jones hit his 21st homer of the season and none bigger or possibly tougher as Jones’ shot to right-centerfield had to fight through a stiff wind blowing into the ballpark.
SPARE NOTES Anderson completes nice week of bowling with USBC All-Events lead
Source: wbrz.com | Read full story →
BATON ROUGE - To say last week was a good week for PBA star Andrew Anderson might be an understatement.
On June 8, Anderson defeated EJ Tackett to win the PBA Tour Finals for his second title of the season – both against Tackett. Anderson swept Tackett in the Race-to-Two championship at Steel City Bowl & Brews in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. That was worth a check of $35,000 for the 30-year-old’s sixth PBA Tour title.
This past Friday and Saturday at the USBC Championships at the River Center, Anderson took the lead in the top all-events division knocking out Cassidy Schaub’s 2,158 for nine games which has stood since March 14.
It was the first lead change in the event since May 9 as Anderson posted 2,184.
“I’m coming straight off a win into our last team practice,” he said in a video interview with USBC. “So the confidence was definitely up there. Riding a wave of momentum and confidence for sure the entire year. It’s been a heck of a 2025 and this is a great way to cap it off. I’m not quite sure it’s enough, but I should hope so.”
Anderson made the most noise in the team event on Friday, shooting the highest series this year on the difficult pattern with games of 258-236-269 for 763.
Maybe more impressive was that after going 258 in the opening game, Anderson made a ball change.
“Most people don’t ball change there,” Anderson said. “I decided, given the scoring pace that we had, I felt like I needed to keep the momentum going, get more score. So I made a ball change that I normally wouldn’t to shoot 230 game two (236), where if I think I stay with the other ball (I was) kind of running out of room. So I think that kind of set the pace. You know, 763 team event, the way it felt on the lanes, that was some of the best bowling I’d possibly ever done. It’s definitely my best three game set at open championships, even better than when I won the (singles) eagle in 2021.”
Saturday, Anderson posted 754 (281-257-279) in doubles and with singles remaining, the chance to put up a number that would be untouchable was in sight.
Anderson posted 224 to start singles and then had opens in the sixth and ninth frame in a 199 second game, making a good number in the third and final game imperative.
“I think that when we were preparing for the event,” Anderson said, “I heard so much about doubles. I heard about how the lane starts at the fresh and how to attack them. I did not realize the transition that we were about to go through. So unfortunately, I definitely left some pins out there in singles, especially game two of singles.
“I told myself going to game three, that we have to take it one more notch because I didn’t really have a ball change to go to. I didn’t really feel comfortable on the lanes (1 and 2) and those last five shots were some of my best.”
Anderson struck in the seventh, eighth, ninth and first ball in the 10th before a 10-pin spare to shoot 244 and 667 to claim the AE lead.
“I knew what was at stake,” he said. Unfortunately, I’m a score watcher. I knew exactly what I needed and thankfully, I pulled it off. I just hope it’s enough. I’ve bowled this open championship enough now, and I know how many good bowlers come through these doors. Somebody’s going to see them equally as good as me, and it just depends on if they out bowl me or not. I felt like I left 50-or-60 (pins) out there in singles, but you cannot win unless you lead in the leaderboard. So now we get to sweat It out.”
Anderson’s team, Holly Lanes and Frie, finished fifth in the standings at 3,226. The leaders, Phat Kids Crew, rolled 3,300 to grab the lead in early April.
So far, some 8,000 teams have passed through the 54 lanes of the Raising Canes River Center since the tournament started what seems a long time ago on March 1. But that means some 3,000-plus teams are still to bowl between now the curtain coming down on the final team shift on July 27.
By the way, the estimated prize fund for the whole event has been listed and it appears some $7.7 million will be returned to the bowlers in cash prizes from this big event. As of the moment, the Phat Kids Crew, is in line for a return of $40,000 if the 3,300 score holds up.
Lots more to come next week, until then, good luck and good bowling,
Kent Lowe

New Orleans Saints and fans brave the heat for day one of mandatory minicamp
Source: wbrz.com | Read full story →
METAIRIE – A noon practice in the middle of June was not for the faint of heart Tuesday as the Saints opened up mandatory minicamp to fans.
Still, on a hot and humid day, fans sold out seats to watch the 2025 New Orleans Saints come together for the first time this offseason.
There were no pads on Tuesday. The team participated in individual drills and a 7 on 7 period along with some special teams work.
As a new season approaches in a few months, veterans like Tyrann Mathieu and Cam Jordan want this team to prove the doubters wrong. Jordan, entering his 15th year with the Saints, has a lot of faith in the new faces in the building; from the coaching staff, to the rookies.
New Orleans will hold two more minicamp practices Wednesday and Thursday. The team will then get a break before starting training camp in July.
